Kirkwood's Howell drafted by Kansas City Royals
Baseball - Thu, Jun. 15, 2017

CEDAR RAPIDS -- Eagle freshman shortstop Korry Howell was selected by the Kansas City Royals in the 19th round with the 570th overall pick of the 2017 MLB First-Year Players Draft yesterday afternoon.

Howell, who hails from Chicago, Ill., earned First Team All-Region honors this season after hitting .394, which included 78 hits and six home runs to go along with 33 RBIs. His elite speed on the base paths resulted in 43 stolen bases, breaking the school record for stolen bases in a single season.

On the other side of the ball, Howell displayed his athleticism in the field as the everyday shortstop for the Eagles, impressing scouts with his agility, range, and strong arm.

Howell will have until the July 7th signing deadline to decide if he wants to sign with the Royals and turn professional. If he chooses not to sign, Howell will be able to rejoin the Eagles in 2018 and will become draft-eligible for next year's draft. Also worth noting, if Howell chooses not to sign by the deadline, the Royals' draft rights to Howell will effectively end and any team will be eligible to redraft him.
