Basketball season kicked off Oct. 5
Kirkwood Eagles basketball teams opened the season to a crowd of Kirkwood students and faculty at the Eagle Spirit Day pep rally Oct. 5 in Johnson Hall.
The men's and women's basketball teams were introduced, along with the members of Kirkwood's Dance and Cheer teams.
Spectators got to see the Dance Team and Cheer Team perform routines, and then watch a three-point shooting contest and a slam-dunk contest.
The men's basketball team, coached by Doug Wagemester, finished forth last year at the NJCAA Division II national championship. Upcoming home exhibition games for the men's team will be held Oct. 25 and Oct. 28 in Johnson Hall. Regular season play begins Nov. 4 at the John Wood Classic in Quincy, Ill.
The women's basketball team, coached by Hall of Fame inductee Kim Muhl, looks to build on its storied franchise. Muhl has led the Eagles to six national championships, including four in a row from 2007-2010. The women's team will hold the exhibitional Kirkwood/Mount Mercy Jamboree on Oct. 16 in Johnson Hall. It will have home exhibition games, Oct. 20 and Oct. 27, before beginning regular season play at home Nov. 4 vs. Kishwaukee Community College.
