Kirkwood Communique reporter, Darrin Cline, talks with Eagle golf coach,
Darin Pint.Kirkwood Community College men's golf team has reigned over Region 11 of the National Junior College Athletic Association. In his 13th year at the helm, coach
Darin Pint looks to make it lucky No. 7.
Kirkwood comes into the 2010 season with high expectations. The Eagles won the region and went on to place 11th in the 2009 national tournament.
The roster includes three sophomores, each of whom gained valuable experience last season and helped the push toward the national tournament.
"We have set the bar. Teams are getting tired of losing to us," Pint said.
Derek McConnell,
Dillon Cooney and
Ned Carter will be the veteran leaders for the 2010 squad. Joining them will be five freshmen, including Kyle Stahle, a three-time Iowa High School State Tournament qualifier from Solon.
Carter, McConnell and Cooney each return from strong freshman campaigns.
During eight meets, Cooney and Carter carded 74.3 and 74.6 stroke averages, respectively, while McConnell ended the season with a 76.7 average through seven meets
Iowa weather has inhibited outdoor practice but has not limited the progress. With the late snow and prevailing cool temperatures, players will have to adjust to the conditions and sloppiness of the courses during the early tournaments.
"How we play in adverse conditions will make a big difference. We have to have mental toughness," Pint said.
Kirkwood steps onto the links March 26 and 27 at Central College in Pella.
