If you have ever been to Johnson Hall to watch a basketball game, volleyball match or a practice, you know how hot the building can get.

Tom Kaldenberg, executive director of facilities, said plans are in the works to fix the problem.

"We still have power issues where we need to add more power to the building," he said. "Then we will be able to air-condition the building."

Once a new transformer and a new distribution system are installed, the facilities department will start working on new additions to the building.

Plans call for new classrooms, physical training space and men's and women's locker rooms and shower rooms.

"That way the visiting teams don't have to share locker rooms," Kaldenberg said.

If the money is there, he said, the project will start this summer and renovations will be done to the west side of the building.

Originally the project was going to take place last year, he said. But because of the economic downturn, Kirkwood decided to wait.

"I'm going to meet with the president and the chief financial officer and we're going to go through our options and determine if money is available," Kaldenberg said.

Johnson Hall was built in 1982 to house the basketball and volleyball teams. Other than a few side projects, the 27- year- old building has never had an extensive renovation.

"It will happen eventually, but we're trying to make sure we do it properly," Kaldenberg said.
