WEST BURLINGTON - Taylor Olson poured in a career-high 20 points Friday night as Kirkwood defeated Malcolm X College, 80-70, in the first round of the Southeastern Community College Classic.

Olson, a freshman from Cedar Rapids Jefferson, hit three 3-pointers in the first half and went 7-for-7 at the foul line in the second half. J.C. Fuller scored 16 points for the Eagles (8-7). Devan Douglas scored 12 points, Jalen Curriehad 11 points and Gage Heffernan chipped in with 10.

Maurice Alexander led Malcolm X with 21 points.

Kirkwood will face Parkland College on Saturday at 5 p.m. in the tournament.
