Wes Sturtz is in his 6th year as the head athletic trainer for the Eagles. During his time with the Eagles, he has helped implement preventative programs, focusing on the knee and the arm.
Prior to Kirkwood, Sturtz spent two years as the head athletic trainer at Chicago Christian High School in Palos Heights, IL.
Sturtz earned his B.A. in Athletic Training from Coe College where he also a member of the Kohawk football team. He and his wife, Jackie, have a son, Cayden, and they reside in Hiawatha.
Assistant Athletic Trainer
Karlye Smith joined Select Physical Therapy in 2018 as the Assistant Athletic Trainer at Kirkwood Community College.
Prior to joining the staff at Select Physical Therapy, Smith served as the Assistant Athletic Trainer at St. Catherine University in St. Paul, Minnesota. While at St. Kate's, Smith designed and implemented rehabilitation programs for 11 intercollegiate athletic teams and collaborated with the head athletic trainer, coaches, strength and conditioning and administrators, along with student-athletes, during their respective seasons. In addition to her work at St. Kate's, Smith worked in various outreach athletic training positions in the St. Paul/Minneapolis area for Twin Cities Orthopedics, Fairview Health, and Woodbury Soccer Club.
Smith graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College with a degree in Athletic Training in 2015. While at Gustavus, Smith took a summer athletic training internship with RehabWorks at the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida. Smith was also a four-year collegiate women's soccer player for the Gusties.
She holds certifications in Graston Technique® M1 and with the National Athletic Trainers' Association and Iowa Board of Athletic Training. Smith currently resides in Dubuque, Iowa.
