[Volleyball] Kirkwood Volleyball Team Excels On and Off the Court - Three Eagles Earn ... http://www.kirkwoodeagles.com/article/628.php

The student-athletes on the Kirkwood Eagles volleyball team have been acknowledged for outstanding achievement in the classroom. Multiple players have been recognized by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) for superior work in the academic arena. In addition, the team as a whole was named a 2013-2014 NJCAA All-Academic Team.

Head Volleyball Coach Jill Williams knows how difficult it can be for student-athletes to juggle athletics and their studies. For Williams, her player's academic accomplishments are a source of pride.

"The life of a student-athlete is tough," said Williams. "There are a lot of demands put on players. As the coach of these young women, I preach the benefits hard work plays in all aspects of their lives. I'm happy for my players who were recognized individually as well as the whole team."

As a whole, the team earned recognition from the NJCAA as an All-Academic Team with a cumulative GPA of 3.493. Individual academic recognitions are as follows:

Cali Beyer, a Liberal Arts student, earned a Superior Academic Achievement award for holding a 3.943 GPA. Beyer is also a member of the honor society Phi Theta Kappa and is a Kirkwood ambassador as well. She will continue her career at Clarke University in Dubuque, Iowa after Kirkwood.

Erin Walker, an Early Childhood Education student, is also a Superior Academic Achievement award winner for holding a 3.907 GPA. Walker, who is also a member of Phi Theta Kappa, will continue her career at the University of Missouri-St. Louis in the fall.

Chelsea Gryp, a Nursing student, has been awarded Exemplary Academic Achievement for her 3.735 GPA. Gryp will attend Mount Mercy University in the fall.

[Volleyball] Eagle Volleyball Earns NJCAA Team Academic Award http://www.kirkwoodeagles.com/article/627.php Congratulations to the Kirkwood Eagles volleyball team for achieving academic excellence as a 2013-2014 NJCAA All-Academic Team.

Many people are aware of Kirkwood Volleyball's successes on the court, but only few may know of its success off the court. Throughout the season, the Eagles remained dedicated to their goals on and off the court. Chelsea Gryp, sophomore outside hitter, states, "Being successful in the classroom was always a goal for our team, and it is great that we have reached our goal".

For the 2013-2014 academic year, the Eagles have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.493. This achievement is not something that should be taken lightly. With this GPA, the Kirkwood Eagles have been recognized as an All-Academic team. This is a national award that isn't obtained easily. Heather Poula, a freshman right side hitter, states, "This award means a lot to us because it isn't something we could have achieved individually. Winning this award required dedication from the entire team". The Eagles are proud to be known for their successes both on the court and in the classroom, and will continue to strive of both athletic excellence and academic excellence in the future.

[Men's Golf] Kirkwood Golf Gains Momentum Heading Into Postseason http://www.kirkwoodeagles.com/article/620.php Eagles get on roll by winning last two tournaments before Region XI Tournament

The Kirkwood Eagles golf team finished the regular season on a high note and now look to claim the NJCAA DII Region XI Tournament championship for the third year in a row.

The Eagles (45-12) started the season ranked fourth in the country and have lived up to the hype despite having a majority of freshmen on the team. With only four golfers that had experienced the pressures of playing at the collegiate level, the younger members of the team needed to step up to tee with confidence in their abilities. According to Head Coach Darin Pint, the Eagles have improved over the course of the season and have a good mixture of veteran leadership and young talent.

"This team is younger than last year's team," said Pint. "I think we've gotten better as the season has gone on but it took a little while for guys to understand that the weather can't be used as an excuse. Four different freshmen have finished in the top five in one tourney or another throughout this spring. Last year we had all sophomores in the top five so our freshman class definitely has some talent. The postseason is a different atmosphere though. We need to be prepared mentally for us to do something in the postseason."

Fittingly, a pair of freshman and sophomore standouts has led the team on the course this season. Freshman Nathan Chilcott (Vale of Glamorgan, Wales) is currently ranked 32nd in the country and has three individual wins this year. In addition, he boasts a 74.22 scoring average. Sophomore Ryan Palser (Creston, Iowa) is ranked 69th nationally with five top-10 finishes and a 75.58 scoring average. Both Chilcott and Palser figure to be major factors as the team prepares for a championship run.

Last year, Kirkwood placed fourth in the nation following the national tournament. According to Pint, the team will need to maintain focus and play with a team mentality in order to have a chance to repeat the success of last year.

"Now is the time to play our best golf," said Pint. "You don't get any second chances. I expect them to compete and play for each other. That is all. We'll see where that takes us."

The NJCAA DII Region XI Tournament will take place at Lake Panorama Golf Club in Panora, Iowa from May 3-4.

[Softball] Kirkwood Softball Finishes Another Amazing Regular Season http://www.kirkwoodeagles.com/article/619.php Eagles now move on to the Region XI Tournament as defending regional champs

The Kirkwood Eagles softball team has once again completed their regular season with an impressive record and now moves on to defend last year's regional crown as the number one seed in the NJCAA Division II Region XI Tournament.

For the second straight year under Head Coach Joe Yegge, the Eagles (49-6, 22-2) will enter tournament play with fewer than 10 loses. In addition, the team begins postseason play with a top five national ranking (4th), just like last season. One could draw parallels to last year's team that finished fifth in the nation, but even though the two teams have similar records, Yegge doesn't like to draw comparisons.

"I don't like to compare this team to last year's team," said Yegge. "It's a totally different group. I think we have actually exceeded our expectations this year. We lost a few key players after last season. The coaching staff figured it was going to be an up and down year with eight freshmen starting. But the players have stepped up and refused to see it as an obstacle. They have done everything they can to continue the success we have had in the past."

The Eagles are among the nation's best in multiple statistical categories. Kirkwood ranks in the top 10 nationally in seven offensive categories including runs (451, 6th), runs batted in (403, 4th), home runs (59, 9th) and walks (201, 1st). Defensively the Eagles boast a 1.49 earned run average to go with 14 shutouts (3rd) and an opponent's batting average of .239 (7th).

According to Yegge, the team's record versus a tough schedule is evidence of the team's potential to repeat as regional champions.

"We have only lost six games this year and have probably played the hardest schedule compared to any of our opponents since August," said Yegge. "I feel if the girls play the way I know they can they have a great chance to bring home the regional championship. This team won't panic when it gets tough. It's like a sleeping watchdog. They are there - and everyone knows they are - so teams are cautious. But if you rattle their cage you'd better look out."

The Region XI tournament will take place at Harlan Rogers Sports Complex in Fort Dodge from May 2-5. The Eagles will take on eighth-seeded Iowa Lakes Community College (15-29, 3-25) on Friday at 1 p.m.
