CEDAR RAPIDS, IA-- Kirkwood enters post-season play on Thursday, May 8th. The Region XI tournament will be held in Waterloo, Iowa at Riverfront Stadium. The winner will host the North Plains District, consisting of Region 9, 11, 13 winners. The North Plains District is scheduled for May 17-18. The winner will be awarded a bid to the 2014 NJCAA Baseball World Series in Enid, Oklahoma. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA-- Todd Rima's Kirkwood Eagle baseball team has four more sophomores that have committed to play college baseball past Kirkwood. First baseman Nick Jones has committed to play for Florida Atlantic University (NCAA D1), catcher and right handed pitcher Angel Merced has committed to University of Ohio Northwestern (NAIA), right handed pitcher Shawn Simmons committed to Saint Ambrose University (NAIA), and left handed pitcher Brian Daphney has committed to play for Clarke University (NAIA). They join Kirkwood sophomore outfielders Eric Schenck-Joblinske and Alex Thompson who signed with Texas A&M University (NCAA D1) and University of Illinois- Springfield (NCAA D2) in the fall. BURLINGTON, IA-- The Kirkwood Eagles (28-15, 12-10) lost 5-4 in Game 1 in Burlington, IA on Friday, despite outhitting Southeastern CC (35-17, 18-6) nine to seven. Eric Schenck-Joblinske put himself in scoring position with two extra-base hits for the Kirkwood Eagles. He doubled in the fourth inning and tripled in the eighth inning.
In Game 2, both the Kirkwood Eagles and Southeastern CC put runners aboard on Friday, but it was the Eagles that were able to take advantage, pulling out a 4-2 win at Burlington, IA. Southeastern CC got 11 hits compared with just six for the Kirkwood Eagles, but Southeastern CC stranded 10 on base. The Kirkwood Eagles would not relinquish the lead as Southeastern CC was unable to weather a four-run sixth inning deficit. Southeastern CC scored two runs in the seventh, but Randy Perez closed out the game for his 3rd save of the season.
The Eagles play their final home games today against Southeastern CC. The doubleheader starts at 2:00pm. The Eagles final regular season games are Monday, May 5th in Moline, IL against Black Hawk College.
