STARKVILLE, Miss. - Krysta Tutsch hit a two-run home run in the top of the sixth inning to lift Louisiana Tech to a 3-2 win over Illinois Saturday in the final game of the February Freezer hosted by Mississippi State in Starkville.
With Tech trailing 2-1 in the sixth inning, Kassie Harris singled and then scored on Tutsch's fourth home run of the season - third of the tournament - to give the Lady Techsters a 3-2 advantage.
The one-run lead held up as Pauline Tufi retired six of the next seven Illinois batters in the sixth and seventh innings as the Lady Techsters completed the tournament with a 3-1 record - the only loss being a 6-4 setback against the host Bulldogs.
Tutsch had all three RBI in the game as her fourth inning single scored Tufi, who had doubled to lead off the frame. The run-scoring single tied the game at 1-1.
Illinois retook a 2-1 lead in the as the Illini recorded a two-out, run-scoring single off of Tufi, who came on in relief of Bianca Duran.
Tufi (1-0) picked up the win in relief, allowing only one hit and one walk in 2.2 innings of action.
Offensively, Tech (6-4) was led by Tutsch (2-3, 1 run, 3 RBI), Anna Cross (1-4, 1 SB), Tufi (1-3, 1 run), Harris (1-3, 1 run) and Duran (1-3).
NJCAA.ORG- CEDAR RAPIDS, IA-- The preseason NJCAA DII Top 20 Softball Poll has been released, placing the Kirkwood Softball team 9th nationally. The top three spots are held by Jones County Junior College, Louisiana State University- Eunice, and Illinois Central College. The Eagles are scheduled to play #3 Illinois Central College on March 6th in Rosemount, MN.
The Kirkwood Eagle Softball team finished the 2013/14 season with a 52-8 record (22-2 ICCAC). They were ranked 4th in the final NJCAA Top 20 Poll and placed nine Eagles on All-Region Teams (2013/14 ICCAC All-Region Teams can be viewed here) along with two NJCAA All-Americans.
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA- The Kirkwood Softball program will host its annual winter softball camp. The camp will be held on December 28th, 2014 and consists of six sessions. The sessions are as followed- Session I: Hitting/Offense, Session II: Defense, Session III: Pitching, Session IV: Pitching, Session V: Catching, Session VI: Catching. The camp will run from 9:00am (Session I) to 5:00pm (Session VI). All campers will recieve a free Kirkwood Softball T-Shirt upon arrival.
The camp will offer indepth instruction from several coaches from around the country including Kirkwood Softball Head Coach Joe Yegge, Kylee Knop (Kirkwood), Jenny Nelson (Kirkwood), Randy Schneider (Wisconsin Associate Head Coach), Matt Egger (University of Northern Iowa Assistant Coach), Julie Gerdes (University of Northern Iowa Assistant Coach), Bre Milnes (Metropolitan State Assistant Coach), Sam Sheeley (Wichita State Assistant Coach), Mike Bosch (Syracuse Assistant Coach) and some of the programs current and former All-Americans.
