Eagles Explode for 41 Runs in Doubleheader Sweep
MARSHALLTOWN, IA- The #3 Kirkwood Eagles continued their dominant spring campaign on Wednesday afternoon, traveling to Marshalltown and overpowering the Marshalltown Tigers in an offensive showcase. Kirkwood swept the doubleheader by scores of 11-8 and 30-18, improving to 25-2 overall, a perfect 5-0 in ICCAC play, and extending their win streak to 21 games.
Game 1: Eagles Surge Late to Take 11-8 Win
Kirkwood found themselves in an early battle, trailing after Marshalltown plated four runs in the first two innings. But the Eagles responded with a relentless offensive push, highlighted by a seven-run surge across the fifth and sixth innings to seize control of the game.
Brady Blake sparked the offense with a 2-hit, 3-run performance while reaching base four times, and Jax Theeler delivered the biggest swing of the game—a three-run home run as part of a 3 RBI day.
Landon Frost added extra-base power with a double and finished with 3 RBIs, while CJ Davis contributed a triple and drove in two runs to keep the pressure on the Tigers' pitching staff.
On the basepaths, Kirkwood stayed aggressive, swiping four bags as Wrigley Matthys, Blake Lundholm, Brady Blake, and Alex Altmann all recorded stolen bases.
On the mound, Drew Zemaitis improved to 3-0 on the season, working four innings, while Tate Proskovec secured the save with three innings of relief to close out the 11-8 victory.
Game 2: Offensive Avalanche Leads to 30-18 Rout
If game one was a battle, game two was an explosion.
The Eagles erupted for 30 runs on 19 hits, scoring in all but one inning and putting up crooked numbers throughout, including a nine-run third inning and a seven-run fourth.
Blake Lundholm led the charge with a monster performance, going 3-for-4 with 4 runs scored and 6 RBIs, including a home run. Brady Blake stayed red-hot with 3 hits, 4 runs, and 5 RBIs of his own, also going deep.
Jax Theeler added to the fireworks with 3 hits and 5 RBIs, while Ty Andrews delivered a huge day behind the plate, going 3-for-3 with 4 runs scored and 4 RBIs, including a home run.
Alex Altmann turned in one of the most dynamic performances of the day, finishing with 3 hits, 3 runs, 5 RBIs, a home run, a triple, and a double—just a single shy of the cycle.
CJ Davis and Cam Templeton combined to score 10 runs at the bottom of the order, with Templeton drawing four walks and crossing the plate five times, showcasing the depth of the Eagles' lineup.
Despite the high-scoring affair, Kirkwood's pitching staff managed to stabilize late. Rafe McConnell earned the win out of the bullpen, while six total pitchers combined to navigate the offensive slugfest.
