Kirkwood Falls to DMACC in Weekend Series
Cedar Rapids, IA- The Kirkwood Eagles faced off against the Des Moines Area Community College Bears this past weekend in a pivotal ICCAC baseball series in Cedar Rapids, with the Eagles recognizing their sophomores during Sunday's finale.
The series opener on Saturday was a pitchers' duel. Despite a dominant performance from Boede Rahe, who struck out 11 and allowed just three hits over seven innings, Kirkwood fell 1-0. The Eagles were held hitless, although they did draw three walks. Lane Spieker managed to swipe a base, but Kirkwood could not capitalize offensively.
In the second game of Saturday's doubleheader, Kirkwood's offense found some life but could not keep pace with DMACC's bats, falling 14-4. Blake Lundholm led the Eagles at the top of the lineup, reaching base three times and scoring twice. Cal Sullivan provided a big swing with a two-run double, finishing 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Landon Frost and Addison Binnie each added two hits for the Eagles. Despite some late offensive pressure, Kirkwood couldn't overcome multiple errors and a strong Bears lineup.
Sunday's series finale on Sophomore Day turned into a wild slugfest. Kirkwood jumped out early with a three-run second inning and later tied the game in the seventh with another three-run outburst. Blake Lundholm had a standout performance, driving in four runs on two hits. Cal Sullivan continued his strong weekend, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs. CJ Davis and Landon Frost each blasted home runs to fuel the offense, while Lane Spieker, Davis, and Kade Knock all contributed stolen bases. Despite the offensive explosion, Kirkwood narrowly fell 12-10 after DMACC put together a five-run ninth inning.
Although the Eagles dropped all three games in the series, they showed resilience and firepower, especially on Sunday. Kirkwood now turns its attention to a road matchup against Southwestern Community College this Wednesday in Creston, Iowa.
